Ben Kallos, our new City Council representative, visited PS 290 on Friday, March 21 to discuss ways that the City Council can help us fund our dream of a rooftop garden.Touring our rooftop with Principal Sharon Hill, Technology Teacher Steven Jaffe, Parent Coordinator Sally Mason, and our PTA co-presidents, Frank Fucks and Marina Niceta de Palazzi. Ben was able to see first hand how a "Green Roof" could enrich our student's science studies, particularly in the area of environmental sustainability. Ben was escorted in and out of classrooms throughout our school, where he enjoyed meeting students and teachers and discussing the 3R's: Reuse, Recycle, Renew. He was especially impressed when our students also knew the 4th "R" - Composting!
As a graduate of Bronx Science High School and SUNY Albany, Ben is a strong advocate of public schools. He appreciated the joyful learning taking place in every corner of our school, as well as the space constraints we confront on a daily basis. He could see that our teachers and students would make the most of a rooftop "classroom" where STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering & Technology - experiments could be conducted in spacious sunshine.
We need a commitment of more than a million dollars to begin the renovations necessary to create a "Green Roof" at PS 290. Please feel free to contact City Council Member Ben Kallos to let him know that you want him to support this project. He is an extremely accessible advocate and will be very happy to address all concerns you have as a member of our community. You can reach him at BKallos@council.nyc.gov or 212-960-1950. His office is in our neighborhood at 244 E.93rd Street. For more information go to BenKallos.com
