Recently, I was pleased to sponsor and vote for an expansion of Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE), and you or your neighbors may now be eligible for these important rent benefits. Int. 243, which was recently signed into law, raises the income eligibility for seniors receiving SCRIE benefits to $50,000 from $29,000.
Starting on July 1st, if you have an annual household income of $50,000 or less, you may be eligible for SCRIE. Here's what else you need to qualify:
- Must be at least 62 years old;
- Rent an apartment that is regulated by the Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) (i.e. rent controlled or rent stabilized apartments or hotel stabilized); and
- Pay more than one-third of the household's total monthly income for rent.
Don't miss this opportunity to receive the benefits that you're eligible for. As we move towards a more affordable city, please stay informed about your benefits and forward this message to anyone who might need it.
Please visit nyc.gov/SCRIE for more information in English, Spanish and more.
Please call my office at 212-860-1950 or email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions or for application assistance.
