FY15 City Budget Report
For the first time since 2008, The New York Public Library will receive an increase in city operating funds. Thanks to Mayor Bill de Blasio, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and the New York City Council, the City's libraries will receive a $10 million increase in funding, of which $4.4 million will go to the NYPL.
Since FY08, The New York Public Library's City funding has been cut $24 million. With the help of our patrons—who wrote approximately 130,000 letters to support our request for an increase in FY15 City library funding—and leadership at City Hall, we've taken an important step towards a full restoration of City library funding.
In addition to this increase in operating funding, the NYPL will also receive $175,000 as part of the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative, sponsored by Council Members Stephen Levin and Antonio Reynoso, and approximately $19 million in new capital funding. Thank you to the following elected officials who allocated capital funding for library projects in the FY15 budget.
